Choosing an SMS: Questions to Ask Any Vendor
A demo shows what a system can do. These questions show what it will do for you.
- Can you show it on my own scope and data, not a sample?
- What does validation check, and when does it run: at entry, or only at export?
- What is written to the audit trail, and can I see who changed what?
- What can be recovered after a deletion, and what is permanent?
- When a qualification is out of scope, what actually happens? Is it flagged, blocked or silently allowed?
- How do I get my data out, and in what format?
- Who owns the data if I leave?
- What do your claims depend on? If a vendor says their system prevents non-compliant enrolments, ask to see it tested.
A good vendor answers plainly, including with "it does not do that." Be wary of anyone who answers every question with yes.
