Onboarding a New Admin: What to Teach First
Shadowing alone passes on habits, including the bad ones.
A new administrator who is good and keen can still create problems in week two, simply because nobody told them how your records work. Teach these first:
Where each type of information lives, and which place wins if two disagree.
Search before you create. Most duplicate students start with someone not finding the existing record.
What scope status means, and what to do when a qualification is not in scope or not yet validated.
The difference between an error, a warning and an info message in validation, and which to fix first.
Who to ask, and what counts as worth asking about.
Then let them do real work with a second pair of eyes for the first few weeks.
The aim is to move knowledge out of one person's head and into something the next hire can read. If your onboarding depends on one experienced colleague having time, that is worth fixing too.
